St John Ambulance believes in empowering our children and youth to be capable in first aid situations. The St John Ambulance ACT First Aid in Schools Program has been running since 2012 in the ACT.
First Aid in Schools Program is an initiative aimed at training ACT school children in basic first aid skills. Over 1 million primary school children have been trained in basic first aid across the Nation since 2012.
This year we are on target to train 4,000 year K-6 Primary School students in basic first aid. The program is free to the students and schools, with St John Ambulance ACT covering all costs.
Kindergarten to Year 2
Junior Primary First Aid Awareness Presentation – Duration 45 minutes
Content:
- How to be a good first aider,
- Dangers at home,
- Big accidents and small accidents,
- Calling 000,
- Recognising ACT Ambulance Service officers,
- Age appropriate minor Bleed and Burn Treatments.
Relatively large groups of K-2 students (up to 75) can be accommodated, including whole year levels at once if there is sufficient room in front of an interactive white board. Or the sessions may be delivered per class.
Students will receive a certificate of attendance.
Year 3 and 4
Middle Primary Basic First Aid Course – Duration 60 minutes
Content:
- What first aid is,
- Seeking Assistance,
- Introduction to the DRSABCD Action Plan,
- Checking for Danger,
- Response check – conscious/unconscous patients,
- How to Send for Help (incl calling 000),
- How to clear and open an Airway,
- How to check for Breathing,
- Unconscious, breathing patients (including recovery position),
- Major Bleeding Treatment,
- Nose Bleeds,
- Burn Treatment.
Classes are limited to 30 students at a time, with a preference for classes between 15 and 25 students.
Students will receive a certificate of attendance, a first aid manual, a roller bandage and a triangular bandage.
Year 5 and 6
Senior Primary Basic First Aid Course duration is 70 – 90 minutes
Content:
- What first aid is,
- Seeking Assistance,
- Introduction to the DRSABCD Action Plan,
- Checking for Danger,
- Response check – conscious/unconscous patients,
- How to Send for Help (incl calling 000),
- How to clear and open an Airway,
- How to check for Breathing,
- Unconscious, breathing patients (including recovery position),
- CPR Demonstration,
- Major Bleeding Treatment,
- Nose Bleeds,
- Burn Treatment.
Classes are limited to 30 students at a time, with a preference for classes between 15 and 25 students.
Students will receive a certificate of attendance, a first aid manual, a roller bandage and a triangular bandage.
High School and Extra Curricular

Junior First Aid (Non-accredited)
This is a course specifically designed for 8-13 year olds to build their confidence and skills in dealing with first aid situations and is run during school holidays in our Deakin Training Facility. It runs from 9am – 4pm and covers topics such as dialling 000, DRSABCD, bites and stings, recognising danger, bleeding, burns and more. Perfect for cub and scout badges! Students will receive a certificate of attendance.
This course is not nationally accredited.

Tailored Workshops (Non-accredited)
St John Ambulance is happy to tailor a first aid workshop to meet your student’s needs. This can range from a 1 hour presentation for a large group in a hall to a full day of practical first aid with a smaller group (15-25 students). Students will receive a certificate of attendance.
